By Jemar T. Ward, President of the New York Urban League Young Professionals
It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Hannukah! Christmas! Kwanzaa! New York City is the place to be during this time. There’s much to be grateful for (not assaulting your boss, vacations, food, friends, family). There are amazing window displays, enormous decorated Christmas trees, and Amazon.com. Beyond the glitz, glam and commercialization there are people less fortunate than us. There are people who are cold, hungry and destitute. What are you doing for others?
I’m extremely proud to say I’m part of the solution along with 250 of you. I’m proud of the work that we’ve been able to do over the course of 2013. At NYULYP, giving is a year-round activity.
For Thanksgiving, 11 volunteers served food to 200 senior citizens. For the Christmas season, 22 volunteers distributed food bags and toys to 300 families and children. We recently collected 200 toys during our rocking Holiday Party. Those toys will be given to Safe Horizon for children affected by domestic violence.
Earlier in the year, we distributed voter registration forms, painted murals at a middle school, served meals at a homeless shelter, partnered with Walgreens to encourage folks in the South Bronx community to get vital health screenings, helped the New York Urban League get high school seniors into college at the HBCU Fair, served as mentors to our scholarship recipients and the list goes on. As Marc Morial, President of the National Urban League likes to say, we are not only a think tank but we are a ‘do tank’.
For those of you who want to help but time is a factor, consider donating. As you may or may not know, we are running a fundraising campaign with Razoo in honor of our 10 year anniversary. Donations will support scholarships and New York Urban League Young Professionals’ initiatives. You may donate by either scanning the QR code below, or by visiting our crowd-funding page directly at http://www.razoo.com/story/10yearanniversarycampaign.
I’m very grateful to the YP members, our friends, partners and sponsors. This chapter really has been operating at a high level and it’s very exciting. I love to talk about YP to any and everyone. Thank you for giving someone who doesn’t speak much, something to speak about!
I wish you all a happy, healthy and giving holiday season. Thanks for all you do!
Yours in the Movement,
Jemar T. Ward | NYULYP President
